~ ~ ~ Notes from Paper Lane: a GNE weblog |
Hey everyone! Yogi and I turned the Stencilton Museum into a Museum of Making. Each item you can make is on display plus a note that tells you how many making skill points you get for ‘em.
Looks like it was already pillaged. :(
Well, the museum was rebuilt in Inspoetica’s house. It just seemed like a better idea to confine it to private viewings I think. But Mina, the idea was yours. :)
Yeah, stuff like that always gets grabbed (guard dogs, GNE needs guard dogs). Even my notes (I think I’ve created two of them now), attempting to catalog the number of making points you get when you make each thing, have vanished (like all notes seem to mysteriously vanish).
Very odd.
Good idea, though! Putting it in a house seems like a good idea.
Hm, maybe we could have quasi-public spaces where anyone can go, but no one but the owner can pick up (or drop, hm) anything.
Various MUDs solve this by allowing you to specify more or less complex locks on verbs attached to objects, so that you could specify for instance that the “take” verb of an object you create/control will only work if the person doing it is a particular player.
In The Real Game, will objects be more complex and programmable, like in typical (Tiny-style) MUDs?
Until there’s a way to “lock” objects, one method of organization over at Collective Detective is the use of the “Trail” in addition to the message board to organize things.
Basically the Trail is a dynamic, easy to sort, outline of info. You can list all the items, locations, and making points needed for fast easy reference.
Worst case scenario, you can easily cut and paste the info if your notes disappear into a new note.
The GNE case on CD is currently free to all. If you’re interested in helping to maintain a trail, please post at CD about it.
The link you gave asks me for a username and password; is it open only to people who sign up somewhere?
(I have to admit I haven’t actually figured out what Collective Detective is yet; my cognitive style must be a poor fit to the website, and/or I just haven’t tried hard enough.)
Orbst - I believe there is a free limited trial there you can sign up for, otherwise you have to pay. I can’t afford any new payments right now, so I haven’t gone there much.
To answer your Qs:
Collective Detective is a community site for people interested in games, puzzles, mysteries, etc. Most of these “cases” benefit from the group collaborating to solve/investigate than from individuals going at it solo.
GNE on CD is FREE
There is indeed a free membership with limitations, or a full-access paid subscription for a nominal fee. The site is pretty much a quasi co-op, we contribute to maintain the site and overhead.
However the GNE case is a “free access” so there’s no cost to post, contribute, etc, and no limitations on accessing GNE related stuff. So please feel free to post, upload files, share insight over there as well. It don’t cost nuthin.’
GNE offline? The CHAT moves here
This also applies to the chats. Paper Lane’s chat is at CD and has no charge to access. Plus you can log the chat easily through a third-party IRC client.
CD could benefit from having some GNE “old schoolers” bring their insight and wit to CD’s message board. Like the start of this discussion, it’s also got tools specifically developed for game info organization.
With GNE going on hiatus, the Paper lane chat has become the de facto “go to” spot. Activity doubles in there when the game goes down.
Any other Q’s, I’m more than happy to answer them. You can often find me in chat, GNE, or feel free to email support[at]collectivedetective.com
