Uifz: Oh my god this is the gayest game i have ever played i thought this was a REAAL mMORPG
So began one of our more lively chat discussions on GNE Global Chat this evening. As you’ll see in the following chat transcript, many pressing issues were brought up. Is this a REAAL mMORPG? Is GNE gay? Where DO we fight all the monsters? Am I gay? Am I SOO gay, or just gay? Am I under or over 12? Whatever the case, these questions must be considered, and we are all grateful to the mysterious Uifz for making us re-examine ourselves and our game.

Poor guy was definitely suffering from culture shock; taunting him was extremely fun. I wonder if we’d been less offended by the whole homophobia thing and reacted with more kindness and less sarcasm, if we might have convinced him that you can have fun even without killing monsters.

(Side-thought: Neopets, while mostly (at least from my point of view) a social and commodity arbitrage game, does have a significant “battle dome” section where you fight monsters. Probably just for folks like this one.)

Heh, this guy must not have seen the pretty peaceful pictures or the blurb that talked about “a web-based massively multiplayer online game of social, political and economic interactions” on the public test sign up. Perhaps we should put up large signs stating that this is a MMOG, not a MMORPG (which is itself a misnomer because most MMORPGs seem to involve a minimal amount of Role Playing).
But he have one valid argument, this game is pointless as almost all games are pointless. Ultimately, accruing stats and cash don’t really do that much, and players realize that it’s the social interaction that counts (something that GNE addresses more directly than MMORPGs do). Having cool social, economic, and political structures to drive the game would certainly distinguish GNE from other MMOGs, but it may just be a more civilized version of chopping up goblins.
So what might redeem GNE? Really cool social, economic, political structures with social interactions at every level, and the ability to build. Oh yeah, and cool people.
