GNE tip #19: When you chat, you’re chating to everyone logged into the game. We may be changing this so only people in the same location can hear each other.
Say it isn’t so! The chat is the television of GNE. It is our GNN. It allows everyone to be involved, or at least informed about things that are occurring right now in the game. I often leave the window open while I am working, just to have the background ‘noise’, and keep in touch with what is going on in my other world. If I have a complete conversation I need to hold with another player, I simply use the IM. If the chat is fractioned, then it would limit such happenings as the attempted PARP uprising, or even our impromptu trivia quizes. We need to maintain a global communique. It is vital to the dynamics of the game.

Perhaps what is needed is a way for the player to choose how global their message is… It could be confined to the “room” they are in, the hub they are in, or remain totally global.

I think the point is that when, say, 100,000 people are logged in global chat will become impractical.

This has been discussed before in the GNE and alternative solutions include newspaper-type announcements. You’d have to pick up and -read- the newspaper, of course.

I don’t think Ludicorp has ruled out the possibility of a global chat-like channel that everyone who’s interested in the global chat can subscribe to. I think they understand the importance of this channel to certain players. (Disclaimer: I do not work for Ludicorp)

Even in the relatively small world of “throwaway” GNE - if 10 people are on global chat, entering a line or two every 10-15 seconds, the window becomes overly crowded.

Channels might work. For example instead of everyone being tuned into a “global” channel, you have “theme” based channels/chats, e.g. “Papermakers,” “Inventors,” “Politicians,” etc.

Has anyone considered multiple smaller worlds for the real game? I like the intimate nature of 20 players at one time. Or, you know, 50. But if there are hundreds of thousands, won’t that be too overwhelming?
